The Man
Born on January 20, 1899 in Flemington, New Jersey to a black father, Redmon Fauset (1837 - 1903), and white mother, Bella Huff Fauset (? - 1923), Arthur Huff Fauset was influenced to "reshape the larger world in the image of his home." His father was a minister and cultural leader within black Philadelphia, valuing the power of writing, education and self-education. His mother was an integrationist that also deeply valued education. Fauset grew up in an environment and amongst people that gifted him with his "thirst for knowledge, the pursuit of education, a spiritual commitment, a passion for improving the human condition, an involvement with religion, [and] a dedication to harmony amongst people of colors" (Carpenter 1999: 219).
